The New Club Med South Africa, Family-Tested: Between Beach Holiday and the Big Five

Advertising / press trip: I was invited to South Africa by Club Med.

Club Med South Africa Beach & Safari is the first Club Med resort in South Africa and one of the few family resorts worldwide that combines a beach holiday and a Big Five safari in a single trip. We spent a week testing the resort on the Dolphin Coast and its sister Vikela Safari Lodge. Our verdict: for families with children aged 4 months to 17 years, this is currently one of the most well-rounded ways to experience South Africa in a relaxed yet adventurous way.

Sure, a Club Med is no boutique hideaway. So why does it still make it onto kidswelltraveled? Because the combination of the Indian Ocean, a surf school, childcare up to age 17 and its own safari lodge in a Big Five reserve is truly one of a kind.

Where is Club Med South Africa?

The resort is in Tinley Manor on KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast, which enjoys around 300 days of sunshine a year, about 60 kilometres north of Durban. The coast is named after the dolphins, which you can spot almost every morning right from the breakfast terrace!

For families, the short transfer is a real advantage: it's only about 30 minutes from King Shaka International Airport to the resort. No hours-long bus ride after a long-haul flight.

Getting there from Germany: There is no direct flight to Durban. Connections with one stopover are the norm, for example via Johannesburg, Cape Town, Dubai, Doha or Istanbul. I flew via Johannesburg, which was surprisingly relaxed. The long leg was an overnight flight both ways. In Johannesburg it's an easy connection at a very well-organised airport, and then just one more hour to Durban.

Time difference: During the European summer, South Africa is on the same time as Germany, and in winter it's only one hour ahead. No jet lag – a big plus for families compared with Asia or the Caribbean.

Health: The resort has nurses and a medical contact person for children. Club Med recommends vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, tetanus and typhoid, among others. Please check with your paediatrician or a tropical medicine specialist before you travel. One of our fellow travellers got a tick, which there can lead to tick fever. The nurse responded straight away and very professionally, and it didn't develop any further.

How family-friendly is Club Med South Africa?

Very. The resort was designed for families from the ground up, from the room sizes and the location of the family pool to childcare for every age. The architecture blends modern design with African influences, and all rooms have a balcony or terrace overlooking the ocean or the green hills.

The resort is very spread out. A pushchair definitely makes sense. Subject to availability, buggies will also take you from your room to the restaurant or pool.

Kids' club at Club Med South Africa: childcare from 4 months to 17 years

The kids' club offering is the biggest reason this resort works so well for families. There are five clubs, each tailored to a specific age group. From age 4, childcare is included in the price. The children learn surfing, trapeze, tennis and padel there with professionals at no extra cost.

What makes this kids' club unique

Learn to surf from age 4. Club Med opened its first surf school worldwide here. Children aged 4 and up get their own beginner courses, while teens surf together with the adults.

Circus school with flying trapeze. One of a kind and an absolute highlight! Also from age 4, right next to the family pool. At the end of the week, the kids often show off what they've learned.

A teen programme that doesn't feel like children's entertainment. The Chill Pass for 14- to 17-year-olds focuses on freedom instead of fixed groups – a concept you'll hardly find at any other resort.

Kids' club on safari, too. At Vikela Lodge there is a Mini Lodge (4–10 years) and a Teens Lodge (11–17 years) with their own pool. More on that below.

Food, activities and excursions

Restaurants and bars

The main restaurant Oceana, with its sea-view terrace, serves a buffet from morning to evening with South African, Asian, European and Mediterranean cuisine. Picky eaters will always find something here. The gourmet restaurant Nguni serves South African surf-and-turf cuisine made with local produce. According to Club Med, over 75 per cent of the food comes from South Africa.

On top of that there are five bars: the main bar Injabulo, the beach bar Dune, a coffee shop with really good coffee!, the Family Pool Bar and the Ilanga Lounge for Exclusive Collection guests.

Sports and activities

23 activities are included in the price. Especially exciting for families:

  • Surfing from age 4 (Club Med's first surf school)
  • Flying trapeze and circus school from age 4
  • Tennis from 4, padel and archery from age 6
  • Tag rugby and team sports from age 6
  • Kayaking and stand-up paddling from age 14
  • Yoga, fitness and gravel bike tours for the parents

Excursions from the resort (extra cost)

If you don't want to travel all the way to Vikela Lodge, you can also book wildlife viewing as a day trip. The programme includes a Big Five safari in Hluhluwe National Park, a hippo boat tour, giraffe encounters, dolphin and whale watching, horse riding on the beach and cultural tours exploring Zulu roots and Durban. I joined the excursion to a traditional Zulu village and was really taken with the people's way of life and their joy of living. Of course, we also joined in a traditional Zulu dance.

Vikela Safari Lodge: Big Five safari with kids

Vikela Safari Lodge is what makes this Club Med truly unique. It's located in northern KwaZulu-Natal in the Vikela Private Game Reserve, an 18,000-hectare private reserve with lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. The lodge is reserved exclusively for Club Med guests. We went on 2 game drives, sunrise and sunset, and were absolutely thrilled both times! The drives never drag, because there's always something to see! Simply perfect with kids.

How the safari extension works

  • Duration: 1 to 3 nights, only in combination with at least 3 nights at the beach resort
  • Getting there: Transfer by car from the resort or from Durban airport, around 4.5 hours. That's how we got to the lodge, too
  • Minimum age: 4 years
  • Safaris: two game drives a day, one early in the morning, one at sunset
  • Included: Full board as a buffet, drinks at the bar, snacks and sundowners on safari, blankets and binoculars
  • Booking: according to Club Med, only via the Service Center

Why the lodge works for families

The lodge is divided into two areas. Families stay in Family Safari Tents with outdoor showers and have their own pool. There is a kids' club at the lodge: the Mini Lodge for 4- to 10-year-olds and the Teens Lodge for 11- to 17-year-olds.

Most important for parents: the safaris are adapted for families, with shorter durations and child-friendly start times. Anyone who has ever sat in a jeep for four hours with a five-year-old knows how much that's worth. In the evening, everyone gathers around the boma campfire.

Best time to visit Club Med South Africa with kids

The resort is open year-round, and KwaZulu-Natal has a subtropical climate. For the combination of beach and safari, we recommend May to September. The South African winter is dry, the vegetation in the bush is sparser and animals are easier to spot. During the day it's pleasantly warm on the coast, while evenings on safari can get cool.

Handy for German families: the summer and autumn school holidays fall right in this period. From November to March it's hotter and more humid, with more frequent thunderstorms. In return, the sea is warmer then.

Our tips for your stay

  • Book early: The resort is new and in high demand, especially during the school holidays.
  • Plan the safari in advance: The lodge nights can only be booked by phone. Sort them out right away with your main booking.
  • Two or three nights on safari: One night is hardly worth it given the long journey.
  • Register for the kids' clubs in advance: via your customer account or the My Club Med app.
  • Reserve a cot: It is not provided automatically.
  • Check vaccinations in good time.
