Lots of people know Mallorca. The Mallorca we're looking for is often a few kilometres back from the coast. Finca MICA is one of those places. The bright house with green shutters sits on the edge of Llucmajor in the south of the island, surrounded by palm trees, fruit trees and a few rows of vines.
This time it wasn't us on site. Alisia and her family from the account Family Next Trip (@family.next.trip) tested the finca for us.
→ Families with babies and toddlers looking for plenty of space and a fenced garden
→ Two families who are friends or several generations, up to eight people plus a baby
→ Parents who would rather cook for themselves than queue at a hotel buffet
→ Families on parental leave or a workation who want to stay longer in the off-season
Why we love it
The name already gives a lot away. MICA is made up of the initials of the host family and their children. What a lovely idea!
The design is simple and natural. Wooden beams, wicker lamps, light-coloured stone and hardly any decor that could break. The kids keep themselves busy here without an entertainment programme. They swing, dig in the big sandpit, cook in the mud kitchen or visit the chickens on the neighbouring property.
We also like the way the hosts look after the place. The renovation was done largely with materials from the island, and the garden is tended in a water-saving, eco-friendly way. You're welcome to pick lemons and oranges from the fruit trees.
The hosts are also currently setting up a small olive grove to make their own olive oil. A great farm-to-table project, and super exciting for kids to see everything you can make from olives.
The accommodation
The finca is only rented out as a whole, so you have the entire property to yourselves. Inside there are four double bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room and a small reading room. One of the bedrooms, with its own bathroom, has a terrace and a separate entrance. That's handy when grandparents come along or two families want a little privacy.
The kitchen is well equipped, with a worktop made of Mallorcan natural stone. Outside there's also an outdoor kitchen with a barbecue and seating area. So on warm evenings, family life happens almost entirely in the garden. The pool is tucked away a little in the garden among the palm trees.
Available for babies and toddlers:
→ Cot with mattress, more on request
→ High chair, children's tableware, baby food warmer
→ Toy box with books, games, sand toys and much more
→ Washing machine in the house
All around: Llucmajor and southern Mallorca
Llucmajor is not a tourist town. Here the locals drink their cortado on the market square, and on Fridays there's the weekly market with a flea market. You can walk to the centre in around 20 minutes, and a supermarket is about ten minutes away on foot.
The hosts have a motto: everything in about 20 minutes. That's how long it takes to drive to the beaches and coves of the south coast.
→ Sa Ràpita: part of the long natural beach of Es Trenc, with a restaurant and a small fishing village
→ Ses Covetes: shallow entry into the water, good for little ones
→ Cala Pi: turquoise cove, busy in summer, reached via stairs, so best without a pushchair
→ Fresopolis: adventure farm with pony rides, about ten minutes away
→ Palma: old town and cathedral, around 30 minutes by car
If you fancy a special meal out, you'll find Andreu Genestra's Michelin-starred restaurant right in a hotel just outside Llucmajor. The airport is only about 15 minutes away, yet there's no aircraft noise at the finca. With kids, we'd still recommend a rental car.
Best time to visit
The finca can be rented year-round and has underfloor heating. That makes it particularly interesting for us outside the summer holidays.
→ February to April: almond blossom, pleasant temperatures for hiking and cycling
→ May, June, September, October: swimming weather without the peak-summer bustle, our recommendation for families
→ July and August: hot and crowded at the coves, but reliable pool weather
→ Winter: a quiet island, Christmas lights in Palma, restaurants in Llucmajor are open. In the off-season the finca can also be rented for a whole month, ideal for parental leave.
The Wi-Fi is fast, so a workation works well here too.
