After our first stop on Mahé, we continued to Praslin – and spent three nights at the La Pointe Beach Huts. What a contrast: instead of a hotel buffet and reception, we had our own little house nestled in greenery, just a few steps from the sea. For us, it was exactly the right decision to experience Praslin in a truly individual way – feeling just right for us when we travel with our two children: special instead of standard.

If you're wondering how to explore Praslin as a family away from the big resorts, today we'll take you to our temporary home on the island's south coast.

Location: Quiet, green, and with sea views

The La Pointe Beach Huts are located in the south of Praslin, in the quiet district of St Sauveur. Anyone arriving here immediately notices: this is not the bustling, touristy side of the island. The complex is nestled in the tropical forest among the characteristic granite rocks of the Seychelles, and you truly feel like you're living in the middle of nature.

It was precisely this quiet character that we particularly enjoyed with our children: no hustle and bustle, but plenty of space to run around, a private small pool, and sea views from the terrace.

Self-catering with a rental car: How the stay works

An important point in advance, if you are planning a stay there yourself: The La Pointe Beach Huts are a self-catering accommodation. There is no 24-hour reception or on-site restaurant, but each house has a fully equipped kitchen. If you wish, you can book breakfast or a Creole dinner (by prior arrangement).

And something else is important: It's impossible to get by without a rental car here. The location is deliberately secluded and quiet; the nearest supermarkets and restaurants are a few kilometers away, and a private car is essential for exploring the island. For us, that was the key: with a rental car, we could discover Praslin at our own pace, stop spontaneously at beaches, and plan excursions as suited our family, just like real locals.

An overview of the La Pointe Beach Huts

The complex consists of several individually designed houses that vary in size and style. This makes the La Pointe Beach Huts appealing to couples as well as families of all sizes:

• Petit Payot – our home for three nights: a family-friendly chalet with two bedrooms, space for up to four people, a private pool, an outdoor shower, and sea views.
• Veuve Noire – also a chalet with two bedrooms and two en-suite bathrooms, a pool, and sea views, ideal for families or two couples traveling together.
• Hummingbird – a two-story chalet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms for up to five people, designed with a more romantic feel.
• Tourterelle – a suite with its own terrace and small pool, designed more for couples.
• Katiti – a tropical-style one-bedroom suite, also ideal for couples.
• Merle Beach Studio – a cozy studio with a private terrace, suitable for couples or small families with one child.

If you need even more space, the sister Villa Tamanu (three bedrooms) offers another option in the immediate vicinity.

Our Home: The Petit Payot

We chose the Petit Payot and it was perfect for us as a family of four. Two bedrooms gave us enough privacy, the kitchen was well-equipped for our home-cooked meals, and the private little pool was exactly what our children needed after a day of excursions to let off some steam. The outdoor shower under the open sky felt like a small spa moment after a long day at the beach.

Our excursions from La Pointe Beach Huts

With the rental car as our base, we really got to know Praslin well during these days. These were our highlights:

Anse Lazio

No visit to Praslin is complete without Anse Lazio – for us, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Seychelles, with powdery white sand, the typical granite rocks, and turquoise water. With children, it's worth getting there early in the day before it gets crowded. There are also 2 restaurants, so you can easily spend the whole day there. We preferred the slightly simpler takeaway restaurant on the left, and it's also cheaper.

Hike to Petit Anse Lazio

From Anse Lazio, we walked along the small hiking trail to the neighboring Petit Anse Lazio. The path is manageable, but with children, it's still a small adventure over rocks and through the forest – and the reward was a beautiful cove all to ourselves.

Day trip to Curieuse Island with snorkeling

THE highlight of our time on Praslin, if not the entire trip, was the day excursion to the offshore island of Curieuse. We went by boat, snorkeled along the way, and on the island itself, our children got to experience the famous giant tortoises up close. The excursion lasts 4-6 hours, depending on the provider, but we found the time flew by even with children, and breaks were always factored in, so it was really manageable for the kids!

Vallée de Mai

We also visited the UNESCO World Heritage site Vallée de Mai, known for its Coco de Mer palms. It was an exciting, shady walk through the primeval forest, which our children also enjoyed because there was so much to discover.

Our conclusion on La Pointe Beach Huts

For us, the La Pointe Beach Huts were the ideal base for exploring Praslin on our own. Quietly located, with enough privacy and comfort for the whole family, and thanks to the rental car, the perfect starting point for spontaneous excursions across the entire island. If you want to stay in a unique, independent accommodation on Praslin rather than a classic resort, this is the place for you. Self-catering comfort and your own rental car are not a disadvantage, but rather exactly what made this stay so special for us. And this type of accommodation is also the most budget-friendly in the Seychelles and ideal for families.
