Why Landhaus Averbeck is so special for families

A real farm, not a stage set. Landhaus Averbeck has been in family hands for generations. Today it's run by Frauke Averbeck-Pennington and Ross Pennington together with the second generation, their daughter Charlotte Pennington and her partner Sören Weidenhöfer. Horse paddocks, woodland, a farm garden and lots of animals are part of everyday life here. Kids can feed goats, pigs, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs, help muck out and garden in their very own vegetable patch.

Small enough to feel at home. With only 34 apartments, the hotel is easy to get to know, even though the grounds are large. Little ones quickly find their way around.

Well thought out, from babies to primary-school kids. There's an extensive range of baby equipment on site: pushchairs, cots, baby food jars at the buffet and bikes with child seats or trailers. That means parents can travel light. The hotel is a particularly good fit for families with babies, toddlers and children up to about 12.

Time for parents. While the kids are being looked after, you have time for the sauna, a massage, yoga, the gym or a drink in the lounge.

Cuddles welcome: the new family beds

Many guests had long wished for this: as part of the renovation of the historic farmhouse, apartments 3 to 6 were given large family beds a full 2.70 metres wide. The whole family can sleep together, with no extra bed and no night-time moves into mum and dad's bed.

Our tip: the family beds are only available in four apartments. If that matters to you, mention it explicitly when booking and book early.

The accommodation: 34 apartments in five houses

Each apartment is individually furnished, with lots of wood, warm materials and loving details. You can choose from five houses:

  • Bauernhaus (farmhouse): The historic heart of the farm. It was freshly renovated in 2026 and has cosy family apartments, some with a family bed. The living and sleeping areas are separated by sliding doors.
  • Koppelhaus (paddock house): Freshly renovated, overlooking the horse paddocks.
  • Schweinehaus and Pferdehof: More individually designed apartments. The accommodation in the Pferdehof is especially new.
  • Cabins: Small cottages with living space on two floors and a special charm.

There are apartments with one, two or three rooms, suitable for families with up to four children. Grandparents can stay in the apartment next door. There are even dedicated packages for multi-generational holidays.

Childcare: up to 58 hours per week

Childcare is included in the price and runs seven days a week from the first day of your holiday. It's split into two groups:

  • Babies and toddlers up to 3 years: registration required, for example with a crawling group, story time and painting
  • Children from 3 or 4 up to 11 years: no registration needed, for example with crafts, treasure hunts, forest time, face painting, kids' Zumba, pool parties and movie nights

The childcare team spends a lot of time outdoors with the kids. The forest programmes in the heath are among the highlights. You decide whether your children stay in the kids' club, join you for the family programme or roam freely around the farm.

More highlights for kids:

  • Pony riding several times a week, included in the price. If you want more, you can book riding lessons on top. In the renovated riding hall, that works even in bad weather.
  • "Landlümmels" play barn: 250 m² on three levels for climbing, sliding and running wild, even when it rains
  • 800 m² outdoor playground, lots of pedal go-karts and a kids' workshop for making things with wood, salt dough and Fimo
  • "Große Bühne" cinema for family movie nights
  • Swimming lessons (for a fee): water familiarisation for babies from 3 months, kids' courses from age 5 with the German "Seepferdchen" badge

Food & All-Inclusive Premium

In the "Kleine Möhre" restaurant there's a buffet four times a day: breakfast, lunch, afternoon coffee and dinner, from morning until around 8:30 pm. Every family has its own reserved table. The kitchen works with high-quality ingredients sourced locally wherever possible. Coffee, tea, soft drinks and selected beers and wines are included all day. In the "Plauderei" coffee room you'll find homemade cake in the afternoon.

For days out you can get packed lunches, XXL picnic baskets or pizza to take away, also included in the package.

Also included in All-Inclusive Premium: daily housekeeping, bike hire, fitness and sports classes such as aqua fitness and Zumba, a personal weekly plan on arrival and free parking with EV charging points.

Pools, sauna & wellness

  • Indoor pool in the former horse stable (5 × 8 m) with a separate baby pool, open all year round
  • Heated outdoor pool by the farm garden (10 × 5 m) with a baby pool, open in the warmer months
  • Finnish sauna (90 °C) and bio steam sauna (50 °C) with a relaxation area
  • Massages, beauty treatments and yoga right on the farm, for a fee

Location in Germany: in the heart of the Südheide Nature Park

Best time to visit

Landhaus Averbeck is a great choice all year round, because so much happens indoors: the play barn, indoor pool, riding hall and cinema.

  • Spring to early autumn: The heated outdoor pool is open, and farm life happens outdoors.
  • August to September: When the heather blooms, the landscape turns purple. It's the most beautiful time for bike rides.
  • Autumn and winter: Cosy days with the sauna, open fires and lantern parades, plus Christmas offers.

Tip: Outside the school holidays, guests are mainly families with children under 6. The programme is then geared towards the little ones.

Our booking tip

Book directly via the Landhaus Averbeck website.
