Five days at Po Popoyo and as soon as we arrived, we felt like we had discovered a very special place. Nestor, the good soul of the house, explained everything to us and, above all, drew our attention to the accommodation's sustainable concept. Because Po Popoyo is completely self-sufficient and solar-powered.

No large hotel complex, no hustle and bustle, just 2 villas, plus that of the host Rani, amidst a farm where papayas, bananas, lettuce, and all sorts of vegetables grow.

Po Popoyo is located on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua and is primarily known for its beaches and good surfing conditions. At the same time, it is also a place that works incredibly well for families, especially if you are consciously looking for something quiet and authentic.

Arrive and immediately relax

The drive there already makes it clear that you are far away from the typical tourist routes. When we arrived at Po Popoyo, we were immediately impressed by this special mix of design, nature, and openness, like a very stylish home in the middle of the landscape. There is a gate on the road that will always be opened by one of the employees when you honk. Because someone watches over the property day and night.

Our children were barefoot within minutes, somewhere between the pool, garden, and terrace, looking for howler monkeys in the trees. 

The villas and why Po Popoyo works so well for families

Rani, the host, convinced me from the start. He even organized the driver from the airport, including the border crossing, for us. He also had great tips for restaurants, rental cars, and activities with kids.

A decisive point for us was the accommodation itself. The villas at Po Popoyo are not classic hotel rooms, but independent houses that are open-plan and connect indoor and outdoor living.

These points are particularly important for families:

• plenty of space with 2 bedrooms with private bathrooms

• a fully equipped kitchen + water dispenser

• a private pool that can be used at any time

• open living areas where everything happens simultaneously

• air conditioning and fans
• free fresh fruit and vegetables from the own garden daily

Especially with children, this makes a huge difference. You are not forced to adapt to hotel routines, but can completely design your day yourself.

In addition, many materials are naturally chosen, and everything blends harmoniously into the surroundings. Sustainable aspects such as solar energy and local products are also consistently taken into account. A life in harmony with nature, as it should be!

What you can experience in Po Popoyo with children

Po Popoyo is not a place where you chase after thousands of to-dos, but rather a "go with the flow" and enjoy the simple life. Nevertheless, there are many opportunities to actively spend your time.

Surfing – also for children

The region is one of the most famous surf spots in Central America. There are also calmer sections and days that are well suited for beginners. Especially the area around Magnific Rock is good for beginners and has a great vibe! Surfboards are available from 10 USD.

Beach days, tide pools, and endless vastness

The beach appears almost untouched. At low tide, small natural pools emerge where children can play and discover animals. Hours of searching, building, observing, without any animation.

Small adventures in everyday life

What makes Po Popoyo special is less individual highlights than the sum of small experiences:

• sunsets that become a ritual every evening

• spontaneous walks on the beach

• encounters with the local environment and nature

• Horse riding, directly opposite there is a horse paddock and also a farmer with cows.

Why we would recommend Po Popoyo to families

Enough comfort for a relaxed trip with children, and at the same time enough authenticity to feel truly elsewhere and discover a new country. After five days, we felt like we could stay forever. It was really hard for us to say goodbye to this special house. 

Our conclusion

For us, it was one of those stops on trips that absolutely stay in memory. The design of the house is simply a dream. I would have loved to pack all the furniture into my suitcase! That's exactly why we would come back anytime.
