Sri Lanka Beach Hotel: Why the Lankavatara Was the Perfect First Stop with Kids

When we started our parental leave with our baby + toddler, the Lankavatara Ocean Retreat on Sri Lanka's south coast was our first stop – and in retrospect, it was exactly the right decision. Instead of immediately diving into the hustle and bustle of the country, we were able to settle in here: between the pool, beach walks, and our first excursions with the baby.

In this article, I'll tell you why Lankavatara is such a wonderful starting point for a Sri Lanka trip with a child, what you can experience there, and which day trips are particularly worthwhile from here. For complete travel planning, also feel free to check out our Sri Lanka South Coast with Child Travel Guide.

The Lankavatara Ocean Retreat: Design Boutique Hotel off the Beaten Path

The Lankavatara Ocean Retreat is located in Kahandamodara, just a few minutes' drive east of Tangalle, on one of the quietest and most untouched stretches of beach on the south coast. Instead of a large resort complex, you'll find a small, lovingly designed boutique hotel with clean lines, lots of natural stone, and a relaxed coastal style that immediately captivated us. This very tranquility and simplicity were invaluable to us with a baby.

A driver from day one – perfect with a baby

One detail that made our arrival and the first few days extremely easy: the hotel directly arranged a driver for us. Especially with a baby, this is priceless – no stress with rental cars, left-hand traffic, or unfamiliar roads, but a reliable, local driver who safely picked us up from the airport and took us on our excursions in the following days. This allowed us to fully focus on our baby and getting used to the country from the very beginning, instead of worrying about logistics.

A week between the pool, excursions, and beach walks

Our week at Lankavatara Ocean Retreat had a wonderfully relaxed rhythm: mornings by the pool, a quiet baby break in the cool suite at lunchtime, an afternoon stroll on the deserted beach, and every few days a day trip to the surrounding area. For us with a baby, the pool was the perfect place to cool off and splash around, without having to worry about currents or waves.

Important to know: The surf at Lankavatara Beach is very strong, and the sea on this stretch of coast is not suitable for children to swim. However, this was not a problem for us – the beach was still beautiful for barefoot walking, collecting shells, and relaxed sunset strolls, while the resort's pool was used for actual swimming.

Day trips from the South Coast

From Lankavatara, some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful excursion destinations can be easily reached as day trips:

  • Udawalawe National Park: One of the most reliable places in Sri Lanka to observe wild elephants. On a jeep safari, you pass large herds of elephants – for us with a baby, a relaxed excursion, as you spend most of the time sitting in the jeep.
  • Yala National Park: Known for its high leopard density, plus elephants, crocodiles, and countless bird species. A little busier than Udawalawe, but an absolute highlight for animal lovers.
  • Ella: The small mountain town in the highlands is a popular day trip for green tea plantations, the famous Nine Arches Bridge, and a significantly cooler climate than on the coast – a nice change when the tropical heat gets too much.
  • Mirissa Whale Watching: Boat tours start from the south coast to observe blue whales and dolphins – one of the most impressive experiences Sri Lanka has to offer. With very young children or babies, it is advisable to check the sea conditions beforehand, as boat tours can last several hours.

Why Lankavatara Ocean Retreat is the ideal first stop

For young families with a baby, Sri Lanka can initially seem overwhelming: a new climate, new food, new impressions. Lankavatara allowed us a gentle introduction – quiet enough to truly settle in, but at the same time close enough to the main highlights of the south coast to get a good first impression of the country in the first week. That's why we would recommend it to any family who wants to start their Sri Lanka trip in a relaxed way.
